“With a little help from my friends”

I hope everyone recognizes this Beatles lyric. If not then I am once again showing my age yet the fact that I'm blogging reveals that you can teach an old dog new tricks. By the way I far prefer the Joe Cocker Woodstock live version.

My last post discussed what Social Marketing used to be. FYI about 6 months ago I was given a new title Director, Social Media Marketing. I was asked to create my own job description, find tools, set goals, and create strategy and tactics to move a strictly outbound lead generating marketing group to the world of Social Media Marketing and inbound demand creation. So today I wanted to share what I learned:

  1. We're way behind the rest of the world
  2. Setting up the online presence is time consuming but simple
  3. Physically integrating social media with other online tactics is relatively easy
  4. Getting Buy in, willingness to change and participation from all the stakeholders is not
  5. You can justify the cost of Social Media Marketing through tracking engagement
  6. Good Marketing tools allow you track leads from engagement to the sales funnel
  7. Managing and maintaining the online presence takes discipline
  8. Content is King
  9. Getting your friends and peers to read and share your content is tough
  10. Everybody needs a little help from their friends

At the end of 6 months have we succeeded?

Our new system of marketing campaign management, combined with the marketing campaign automation tools we use today have allowed us to launch new b2b marketing programs that are coming to fruition by driving more inbound leads than ever before. In the next six month's it'll keep getting better. How?

Hi Marty,

Great post (and thanks for the ear worm!)

My clients all want to know more about how social media can help them grow their businesses. The questions I hear most often are "What will I get back if I get on the social media band wagon? Will it get me more sales?"

That's when we have the conversation about the Myth of the Magic Marketing Bullet. Marketing success is about trying different things and learning what works for you. And with SM, you have to give it time, nurturing, and go about it honestly. Followers know if you're mass blasting and not providing any value and they'll drop you fast.

The process is easy, the success takes time.
